Video Production – Graphics A simple line strategically placed can make the difference between good design and boring. That’s the essence of graphic design. In broadcast, graphics is a loose term that covers simple static art and moving elements. Color is just as important in graphics as shape and placement. Warm colors tend to advance toward you while cool colors recede to the back. TV frames are such a small palette that it is important to know how much information you can reasonably jam in there. Most artwork can be converted to video so long as you know the rules. Sometimes existing graphics need to be touched up so that they do not buzz or moray on screen. Art destined for print needs to be converted from the CMYK color space to YUV or RGB depending on the system. All in all, graphics for TV are a great supplement to your overall project. For longer project, slates (full screen art that acts as a back-plate) help tie segments with a common theme. Text can float over the same slate each time you cut to a title card. Lower thirds are another graphic element that can be used during camera footage to display names, dates or titles while your on air talent or subject is on screen.
