Video Production – Editing
Video editing is just as much a technology as it is an art form. Traditional video editing traces its roots to film editing. Work prints are cut up and spliced together in a linear order to make a rough print of the project. Once everything is approved a negative cutter goes back and cuts the original negative together to create the original cut master from which all intermediate elements are created (IP’s & IN’s). What we view in the theater is printed from one of the many production IN’s. The first video editing was performed this way. The original 2” Quad tapes were cut and spliced just like film. Linear video editors came next with multiple tape deck sources. Editing software cued the switches between tapes and the cut was recorded onto the master. Currently non-linear editing is the state of the art. Software based editors make virtual cuts, effects and composites to video on your hard drive. Non-Linear video editing is non destructive. The original video is safe on your tape and on the hard drive. Software creates cues and renders effects separately and assembles them on the fly for viewing and output back to tape.
